Design

The use of valuable materials supports and enhances the expressive power of the grave marker. A design in metal can effect new possibilities and scope for artistic design. Lettering designed in metal is perceived on its own as complementary to the stone, thereby increasing its effect. Metal lettering, as well as numbers and numerals, attached to the stone communicate with the surface of the material through a tension that makes them distinct from the stone’s background. The most filigree lettering and most finely drawn lines open up whole new areas of design when they are worked out in detail through a wide variety of production processes and with consummate craftsmanship. When the surfaces of the lettering and stone meet, the differing textures can give rise again and again to the finest nuances of illustrative tension and alternating interstices pervaded with space. The resulting plasticity – caused by the play of light and shadow – provides lightness as well as depth and atmosphere owing to the raised relief of the lettering.

Development

In our studios, we work in close cooperation with experienced designers and artists of renown to develop new kinds of lettering which are modern, of high aesthetic quality, and will retain their value in the long term. Developing a type of lettering is complex and differentiated. A type of lettering including upper- and lower-case letters, numerals and special symbols can amount to up to a hundred characters. Yet each letter should have a balanced design while at the same time harmonising with every other symbol. When designing lettering for a grave marker, the numerals are especially important, since the dates of birth and death often take up half of the text space and have a decisive influence on the overall appearance. Unlike lettering for letterpress printing, additional factors play an important part in grave marker design, such as the distance and angle of observation, the size of the letters, or the effect of light and shadow. Our knowledge and our many years of experience in this area are the foundation for fitting lettering design at the highest level.
